Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. All cheesy romance factors aside, I think Valentine’s Day is more about showing appreciation to people you care about. Eileen Spinelli’s Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch, the story of a lonely man who receives a life-changing valentine, completely captures this great time of year. If you are looking for a Valentine’s Day read-aloud or a great way to teach empathy and kindness in your classroom, look no further.
Mr. Hatch is a fantastic way to do something different with your students to celebrate the holiday:
- Instead of the standard Valentine ’s Day party this year, why not have a “Somebody Loves You” lemonade and brownie party while watching this terrific reading. After the video, discuss with your students how Mr. Hatch feels when the mailman comes for the second time, activating prior knowledge and evaluating the illustrations and text to make logical inferences.
- Add a writing activity and help “spread the love” among students by spending the week before Valentine’s Day sending secret admirer messages, like this teacher, to promote tolerance of fellow classmates.
